The OPEDUCA Project offers a set of guidelines, instruments and applied practice to be molded into a coherent program for the full scale transition towards ESD-based Education, integrating amongst others Environmental Education, Entrepreneurship, Technology, Languages and Citizenship.
Main instruments are 'Flight for Knowledge', 'BusinessClass', 'Global' and 'MasterClass'.
OPEDUCA Flight for Knowledge is the pedagogical framework to operationalize the ongoing theme-based learning. Although elements of the instrument are inextricably linked and part of a continuous process, I will present the concept by distinguishing between the idea of ‘Fields of Knowledge’ and ‘Flight for Knowledge’ as educational process, then link the instrument to the concept of OPEDUCA-regions by way of distributed sources of education.
Based on the OPEDUCA idea students should be enabled to learn anytime, anyplace, with anybody, through any device on future defining themes, Flight for Knowledge comprises the basic instrumentation. The pedagogy sees amongst others to theme-based transdisciplinary learning and continuously connected education within the region.
OPEDUCA BusinessClass comprises Entrepreneurship Education, Entrepreneurial Learning, Business Education and Personal Development.
BusinessClass particularly sees to the development of youngsters’ belief in own ability to develop, evoke change, achieve and belong, be of value to society and themselves. The development of an entrepreneurial attitude is seen to complement the growing understanding of a more sustainable future with the capacity to envision change, re-steer from the present, create and re-built. The ability to turn ideas into action as the common denominator of human’s capacity to create change, be agentic, effective, entrepreneurial.
BusinessClass focuses on behavior, the development of an entrepreneurial attitude and competences. The capability to transfer thinking into entrepreneurial action in a socially responsible way, is key.
OPEDUCA Global manifests the local-to-global learning connection, taking the other instruments to the level of regional exchanges across the globe.
Following the introduction of the concept of Open Educational Areas/regions, OPEDUCA Global sees to the students’ understanding of one’s own region as a composing part of global society. The concept expands the working of Flight for Knowledge and BusinessClass, taking students’ study of the fabric of society from local to global by way of exchanges with peers, Teachers and Educators in other regions around the world, outreach to educational sources beyond one’s own region.
Respecting the role, position and capacity of Teachers of strategic importance for any envisioned improvement of education, OPEDUCA MasterClass is a key instrument.
The conjunction where teachers and learners cooperate is the heart of the educational process. It are first the teachers that take up the essentials of OPEDUCA-based learning by way of challenging and intensive more-day OPEDUCA MasterClasses.
Teachers are expected to have a more prominent role in OPEDUCA then one might presume when considering the student-owned and -steered qualities of the approach. Their proposed practice contains more than classroom-based instruction and not degrade the profession to a ‘guide on the side’ or ‘coach’. Any sense of obsoleteness will make way for more relevance as the teacher has to deliver on the individual, Study-Team and school-level.
